So how can a website be solar Powered?
... and do the websites work at night?
The Energy Grid purchases "Green Tags" to an amount equal to the number of servers our websites operate on, currently 4,590kWh.
Each renewable generation system can sell, not only the electricity it generates, but also the the right to claim that power is renewable.
For example, I want to power my house with solar electricity, but I don't have an adequate roof. My local electric company, though, has a renewable generation plant and I can help support that plant by paying a few extra dollars a month. I pay one price for the power, then a few dollars more for the fact that the power is generated by the renewable system. That extra few dollars pays for the "Renewable Attribute." It's called a Green Tag.
If you have a solar system on your home that produces 4,500kWh of electricity and I pay you $60.00, then I have bought your Solar Attribute. I can legally, and morally, claim that the electricity I am using is renewable. Of course, you can only sell your green tag once, and this is carefully regulated.
There are other types of attributes, as well. Carbon tags are an example. If I have two plants, and each one is allowed to produce 20 tons of carbon, I'm OK if one produces 35 and the other produces 5. Similarly, I have one plant that produces 5 and another comapny produces 35, they can purchase my carbon credit of 15 from me and avoid going over the limit. That's how a market is made attributes.
Imagine what would happen if everyone wanted to power their houses and businesses with solar energy and wanted to buy Green Tags? The value of Green Tags would increase and more funding would be available for people who wanted to install solar systems.
